Next-Generation Klippel Loudspeaker Parameter Measurement — Fast Large Signal Identification (FLSI)

Klippel introduced the Large Signal Identification (LIS) and Linear Parameter Measurement (LPM) software tools 25 years ago to measure linear and nonlinear loudspeaker parameters in conjunction with Klippel analyzer hardware. To advance the state of loudspeaker parameter measurement, Klippel has now developed the Fast Large Signal Identification (FLSI), a new measurement software module designed to replace both LPM and LSI.

This article offers an overview of Dayton Audio's new OmniMic 40k and the Digital Audio Test System Loudspeaker Analyzer (DATS LA). The OmniMic 40k is a substantial upgrade from the original Dayton OmniMic V2 measurement system, while the new DATS LA is an entirely new loudspeaker measurement analyzer and software, using a patented DC offset bias technique to derive both small and large signal parameters, including both linear and nonlinear output capability.

Even a perfectly linear loudspeaker produces two types of distortions because of the movement of its membrane. First Doppler distortions, a.k.a. Phase Modulation (which the author addressed in his October 2024 article for audioXpress), and secondly distortions stemming from the Nonlinear Amplitude Modulation, characterized in this article. More importantly, this article also addresses how these harmonic and intermodulation spectral line distortions can be minimized and eliminated in loudspeakers.

In another example of cutting-edge experiments that deserve recognition, Joerg Panzer (R&D TEAM, Germany) and Patrick Macey (PACSYS, UK) detail an investigation of the sound pressure response and radiation impedance of a loudspeaker horn driven by an electro-dynamic transducer. The two authors (and creators of the respective software tools) combined measurements with simulation software using finite and boundary element methods and explored the associated issues with meshing for each method.
