Mike Klasco writes all about the cutting-edge SonicEdge MEMS Ultrasound Speaker-In-Chip. A next-gen MEMS solution for TWS earbuds, hearing aids, and hearables. Entering production in 2023, this unique ultrasonic shutter MEMS-based speaker system represents a decade's work in a unique topology. The core of the design is one or more apertures driven by the ultrasonic carrier signal and one or more movable and over-sized obstruction elements that are configured to modulate the ultrasonic carrier signal (think of a shutter) thereby generating audio.

SonicEdge, an Israeli startup working in MEMS speakers has registered a Danish business unit at Sound Hub Denmark in Struer. SonicEdge has developed an ultra-compact MEMS speaker solution based on a patented design and modulated ultrasound technology that promises to be significantly smaller, more energy-efficient and more robust without compromising on sound quality. Having found investors and clients in Denmark, SonicEdge is now looking to develop its business further and hire for its Danish R&D department.

Norwegian company Elliptic Labs has successfully introduced its ultrasound sensing technology to the market, leveraging early agreements with major chip suppliers to the IT and mobile industries. Following partnerships with Texas Instruments, Infineon, Knowles, Cirrus Logic and AAC Technologies, at the implementation level, Elliptic Labs this year expanded its support directly with chipset manufacturers ARM, Intel, Qualcomm and more recently MediaTek. And the company's efforts in ultrasound-based sensing are just in early stages.

Elliptic Labs, a company specializing in ultrasound sensing, announced Inner Peace, a new technology that takes presence detection to new levels and is aimed at the fast-multiplying market for intelligent personal assistants and similar consumer/household devices. The new technology was demonstrated at the 2017 Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, and is more reliable, and covers broader area than alternative approaches.
