IDUN audio Granted US Patent for Dynamic Spatial Audio Technology

IDUN audio announced that it has been granted a key US patent for its cutting-edge technology enabling real-time, dynamic spatial audio through time-varying HRTFs. The patent, US2023-0403528 A1, listing Pauli Minnaar as the inventor on behalf of the Danish spatial audio company, is an important milestone that further validates its longstanding efforts. The technology at the core of IDUN audio's advanced spatial audio engine for personal audio devices has been embedded on leading platforms and chipsets from Qualcomm, Airoha, or BES Technic.

This is an interesting patent awarded to Lakshmikanth Tipparaju, Allan Devantier, William Decanio, and Andri Bezzola, on behalf of Samsung Electronics - effectively the audio research team that Samsung created in Valencia, CA. The industry has attempted to achieve a successful implementation of acoustic radiation closely coupled to a boundary surface for omnidirectional and subwoofer applications - unfortunately, mostly plagued by resonances generated by the waveguide or reflector surface. This new approach appears to be an effective solution.

This patent analysis looks at an interesting wearable acoustic device, patented by five inventors on behalf of Bose Corp, and which the company would later apply in its Bose SoundWear Companion - the brand's own iteration of an around-the-neck or neckband concept, launched at the end of 2017. With a significant number of claims, the awarded patent describes “a neck loop that is constructed and arranged to be worn around the neck," with drivers located, one each, below the left and right ears of the user, and two acoustically coupled waveguides.

This article reviews a patent granted to Apple, describing an electronic audio device including an enclosure having an acoustic output opening and a speaker positioned within the enclosure, as implemented in the company’s range of iMac desktop computers. The speaker and the acoustic output opening are acoustically coupled by an acoustic output pathway and damping chamber.
