Audio Engineering Society Celebrates 75 Years in 2023

The Audio Engineering Society begins its 75th Anniversary year. The Society’s vast contributions to the art and science of audio engineering are recognized globally, including with the announcement that the Society is being honored by the Recording Academy with a 2023 Technical GRAMMY Award acknowledging its “contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field.” The next key event for the Society will be the AES Europe 2023 Convention, being held at Aalto University, Espoo, near Helsinki, Finland, May 13 – 15.

In celebration of its 60th anniversary as one of the world's foremost manufacturers of high-fidelity audio products, Audio-Technica announced the introduction of its ATH-WB2022 wireless wooden headphones. The limited-edition ATH-WB2022, crafted from layered woods, is touted as the finest Bluetooth headphone ever created by Audio-Technica. The ATH-WB2022 supports up to 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution music listening, and features the world’s first completely balanced audio output system for wireless headphones.

Swiss high-end audio firm, Nagra, announced the upcoming release of its first phono cartridge – the Nagra Reference MC cartridge, with the first units scheduled to be delivered in December 2022. Designed in parallel with the Nagra 70th Anniversary Reference turntable/tonearm system, announced in 2021, the new moving coil phono cartridge is an ideal companion component to complete the ultimate LP playback platform.

Audio-Technica announced the introduction of its 60th Anniversary AT-LP2022 Manual Belt-Drive Turntable, a limited-edition record player that celebrates A-T’s 60 years in high-performance analog audio. This fully manual turntable includes a limited-edition Shibata stylus and carbon-fiber tonearm. A limited number of AT-LP2022 turntables will be offered worldwide, each carrying a unique serial number.

Happy 36th Anniversary Voice Coil! The November 2022 issue of Voice Coil once again celebrates the launch of this periodical as an information resource for the loudspeaker industry. Also, this month, Mike Klasco writes about technologies and solutions to enhance low-frequency performance, and James Croft reviews a recent patent awarded to Panasonic for a loudspeaker arrangement for a Near to the Ear Subwoofer in a car seat. NAD Electronics is celebrating the brand's 50 years with a series of events from October 2022 until May 2023, at the Munich High-End Show. Another initiative to celebrate the 50th anniversary of NAD’s founding in 1972 is the launch of a vintage-inspired limited edition integrated amplifier. The C 3050 LE Stereophonic Amplifier pays homage to the 1970s classic NAD 3030, featuring retro design elements including a satin walnut case, dual VU meters, push-button controls, and NAD’s original cursive-style branding.

Mike Klasco writes about Dr. Kurt Müller's 100-Year Anniversary and revisits the milestones of this important supplier of cones, suspensions, dust caps and surrounds company. Perhaps the oldest surviving cone factory in the world and certainly one of the most advanced, DKM was originally founded in 1922, in Berlin, and in 1970, extended its product range with the acquisition of Pulsonic Ultrasonics Limited (now known as Kurt Mueller UK Ltd) in the United Kingdom. Xperi, the company that holds DTS, confirmed that it expects its DTS Play-Fi, DTS Play-Fi Home Theater for TVs, and DTS Play-Fi Home Theater for Speakers to continue to expand its adoption by the consumer electronics industry, and with TV manufacturers in particular. At IFA 2022 in Berlin, Germany, DTS is announcing that new TVs from Philips and Vestel will introducing DTS Play-Fi Home Theater for Speakers, as the company also unveils additional products and features.

CEVA, Inc., the wireless connectivity and smart sensing technologies licensing company, announced that cumulative royalty-bearing chip shipments that include CEVA IP surpassed 15 billion units during the second quarter of 2022. This significant milestone has been achieved as CEVA approaches it’s 20-year anniversary of being a public company. While the first 10 billion CEVA-powered shipments spanned more than 15 years, the next 5 billion shipments took less than three and a half years.
