The size of the global market for true wireless earbuds and the emerging category of hearables is expected to reach 120 million units this year and 230 million units in 2020, growing 90% YoY, according to the findings of Counterpoint Research’s latest Hearables Market Forecast. The overall true wireless market is expected to grow at 80% CAGR from 2019 to 2022 with a similar growth momentum as the early smartphone market a decade ago.

After a very successful Q4 2018, which saw shipments reach a total equal to the previous three quarters combined, Q1 2019 witnessed year-on-year growth of 223% in units and 188% in revenue. Consumers appear to enjoy the freedom that truly wireless products bring. Although, the continued domination by AirPods does still mean that the market remains a largely Apple phenomenon.

Predicting that over 50% of all wireless headphones will incorporate Hearable Voice assistants, touch sensors and other interface technologies, a new report by Juniper Research forecasts that hearables will become the new standard for personal audio in under 5 years. The new report from Juniper has found that there will be an estimated 417 million hearables in use by 2022. This includes fitness-focused devices, hearing augmentation and purely audio-focused devices.

Smart speakers are the hottest segment in consumer electronics, and Strategy Analytics has completed a major new survey of the first wave of users, to understand purchase motivations, usage, satisfaction and ownership patterns. The company's research leaves us in little doubt: smart speakers are a hit with the vast majority of people who are now using them (17% of the US screener population sample). Satisfaction levels are typically in the 90% range, and nearly two-thirds of users expect to buy another one within the next two years.

A strange week we had, with most of the technology world focused on another edition of GSMA's Mobile World Congress (MWC), with the usual gush of new iPhone-clone announcements and most of the key semiconductor giants dividing their announcements with embedded world 2018, taking place at the same time in Nuremberg, Germany. Voice UI chipset specialist DSP Group, and Harman International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, announced their cooperation implementing voice input technology, based on DSP Group’s SmartVoice Audio/voice SoC and HDClear far-field multi-mic algorithms. Research from Fraunhofer IDMT Finds Use of Soundbars Actually Improves TV Viewing Experience

The German Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT, in Oldenburg, Germany, has compared the speech intelligibility and sound quality of a Samsung smart TV and a Samsung soundbar. The results show that using the soundbar considerably reduces listening effort in comparison to using only the TV set. 15 adults aged between 25 and 55 were invited to the Fraunhofer IDMT’s Sound Technologies Lab (STL) in Oldenburg for the study.
