Applied Psychoacoustics Laboratory (APL) announced a software update for its binaural rendering plugin and standalone application. APL Virtuoso v2 introduces acoustics emulation and externalization, simulating the experience of listening to loudspeakers in a perfectly tuned room. APL also announced support for the Audeze Maxwell head-tracking headphones, as well as the ability to load speaker configurations, and personal HRTFs.

THX Launches Upgraded THX Spatial Creator Plugin with Synchronized Immersive Audio Feature

THX and online marketplace Plugin Alliance launched version 1.1 of THX Spatial Creator, a digital audio workstation (DAW) plugin that is basically a positional audio rendering tool for immersive production. It enables headphone-optimized binaural spatial audio mixes, mono/stereo audio upmix conversion, and is compatible with most DAWs. THX Spatial Creator version 1.1 now automatically synchronizes any motion preset to match the tempo of a project or song’s beats per minute (BPM) - a quick and efficient way to add spatial detail to any audio mix, particularly when referenced to video.

This patent, awarded to Polk Audio, describes a very specific loudspeaker design that claims to be able to achieve better stereo sound reproduction with “a realistic ambient field and a larger, and more stable acoustic image.” This obviously aims at achieving something that Polk Audio actually patented nearly 40 years ago, with its original Stereo Dimensional Array (SDA) loudspeaker, and for which the new updated patent now provides a new improved version. The Verband Deutscher Tonmeister e.V. (VDT) association awarded Karlheinz Brandenburg the Medal of Honor for his services to the audio industry. The award was presented to Brandenburg during the opening ceremony of the 32nd Tonmeistertagung in Düsseldorf, Germany, which also honored Günther Theile. The VDT is one of the oldest and biggest professional associations in the audio industry and the promoter of the biannual Tonmeistertagung conference and exhibition, which took place from 8 to 11 November.
